So I spent my afternoon working on a proof-of-concept for a design project looking at the effect of caffeine on the emotional response to happy or sad stimuli. (Translation: drink this coffee and watch this video of kittens while we measure your brain activity.)
In an effort to optimize the protocol and to collect some preliminary data, we tried it on me. For
fun the sake of scientific curiosity, we played the Chelsie beach scene to see what would happen.
For perspective this is my baseline brain activity, no emotional stimuli:
And this is my brain activity watching the clip:
Yes, those are on roughly the same axis. Shippers would be such interesting subjects. Any of you lot want to drop by for a brain scan? ;-)
(For you scientists out there: this is basically raw EEG data, minimal signal processing, reduced set-up (not a full scan). We can draw no conclusions from this - other than something happened. For what it’s worth, this was the highest response to anything this afternoon. For a really interesting paper on EEG’s and emotion see here.)
